This character home in Mount Maunganui hadn’t been touched outside for over 50 years when purchased. The owners wanted to increase the indoor outdoor flow into the backyard, including space for a spa, along with edible gardens to grow their own food.
Staggered decks were added off the deck to draw people into the backyard for dining and relaxing, and pleached hedges were used to create privacy between the outdoor living spaces and the spa area.
Around the back of the home the under-utilized lawn was partially removed to create a carport & turning space, along with retaining added to the slope with layers of organic edible gardens built into it. This edible garden included raised macrocarpa vege beds for easy maintenance & harvesting, a variety of citrus & stone fruit trees, trailing Rosemary to soften the retaining walls, & feijoa hedges for shelter.
